At the beginning of this year, 2014, something had huge impact on the world.
We can hear the sound tracks of it everywhere, we can see the images of it everywhere.
What is it?
Yes, the movie 'Frozen'.
It gained a huge fame since it is released.
It won the Oscar for 'Best Animated feature film' and 'Music' and has become the top-grossing animated film of all time, surpassing the $1.063 billion earned by fellow Disney/Pixar title 'Toy story 3'.
Actually, it was made by the creators of 'Tangled' as known as 'Rapunzel' in Korea.
I watched a movie 'Tangled' before and I was very impressed about not only story but also songs in it. So when I heard the news that 'Frozen' would be released, I was really looking forward to watch it.
Anyway, my introduction might be long.
What I'm trying to show you is comparing two movies in terms of 3 things;Storyline(New princess type), Characters and Sound tracks.
-'Tangled' and 'Frozen'.
1. Storyline(New princess type)
* Tangled
Rapunzel is not a typical Disney Princesses who are absolutely normal; she carries her long blonde hair which has the magical ability to reverse aging and heal. In terms of her personality, she is brave, clever and doesn't fear to do what she've never experienced before. So she even suggests a deal to stranger, 'Flynn Rider'(Eugene). However, even though she is such a that woman, there is a common thing between her and stereotype princesses; wait for other's rescue. Before she meets Flynn Rider, she does not overcome Mother Gothel's strict guardianship and thus stays in the tower, longing for the day when her life "begins".
* Frozen
Frozen show us a new wave of Disney princesses who have moved away from house chores, fragile frames and “damsel in distress” syndrome(Doing nothing and just waiting a rescue by man). These new princesses take charge and are in fact the main character of the film, no longer simply the prince’s counterpart like stereotype princesses in the past. Tangled combined past and present and now Frozen sets a new idea that love is not merely between a man and a woman but between siblings and friends. This type of love can, also, break the ice and melt the heart.
2. Characters
* The main character
Rapunzel is totally wonderful. Her friendly and naive behavior don't really make her dumb. She's totally optimistic at every turn, she sees the best in everything, she is willing to try anything and she goes for anything she wants.
Anna and Elsa: Anna is really the main character, but you could argue that Elsa makes the storyline. Or is Elsa really the main character and Anna is just supporter learning a few side lessons while Elsa figures herself out behind closed doors? Either way, they need each other and we need them both.
* The bad guy
She, mother Gothel is a witch but actually we can't actually see her own magic in the movie. She just sing a song, makes some soup for Rapunzel and so on... doesn't use magic except when she reverses her age herself by using Golden flower. However, she is real bad guy. In order to fulfill her greed for aging reverse, she is willing to do anything she can like lying to others, stealing a baby, threatening someone with a dagger and even stabbing it. Oh... such a bad guy she is.
This is a tough one because Hans isn't really the bad guy compare to other Disney's work. In Frozen, one of the messages is that the bad guy is fear, ourselves, quick decisions driven by emotion bereft of critical thinking.
3. Sound tracks♬
* Main theme song
You should know 'Let it Go', main sound track of 'Frozen'.- It placed on the music chart of several countries(US, UK, South Korea, Canada, etc.)
For comparison, let's listen the song 'I've got a dream' of 'Tangled'.
When we listen 'Let it go', we can share the feeling of Elsa-In the beginning, she feels loneliness but after she realize she doesn't have to be a good girl, she's in freedom.
And while listening 'I've got a dream', all characters in it sympathize with dream of Rapunzel and share there dreams with each other.
Both are really good so it's really hard to comparing.(But I prefer 'Let it go'!)
* Love song
Both movies have 'Love' songs
- 'Love is an open door' of Frozen, 'I see the light' of Tangled.
The difference between them exists in terms of 'how they fall in love'.
In 'Frozen', Hans and Anna love each other at first sight.
However in 'Tangled', Rapunzel and Eugene passed through many dangers and overcome it together. Through these experiences, they fall in love finally.
But it doesn't mean that either one is better than other.(But I prefer 'Love is an open door'!)
There are some argument that comparing 2 movies. I attach a link which is one of it here
As you see, it's still controversy that which one is better. Some prefer Frozen while other doesn't agree with it. Sometimes they blame each other because of different preferences between them.
Let's summarize the post.
In my view, Tangled breaks the stereotype of Disney works and with this experience, Frozen develops it. In terms of music, Frozen got it's popularity than Tangled. But it doesn't mean that Frozen is much better than Tangled. Tangled tries first attempts to think out side of the box and Frozen successes it. Without Tangled, Frozen may not exist. It's a chicken and egg situation.
So my conclusion is this.

I was really impressed with Frozen. Its song was great
